Episode 2 | Stockholm, Sweden
Welcome to The World, Through my Eyes.
In this episode, Stockholm, Sweden.
Welcome to Stockholm
Clean-lined, cobblestoned, and effortlessly cool—Stockholm charmed me from the start. Built across 14 islands and connected by more than 50 bridges, it’s a city that invites you to wander. Sometimes by foot. Sometimes by ferry. Always with a sense of history and style.
What struck me most was the blend of old-world architecture and Nordic modernity. Add in the generous green spaces and the shimmer of water at nearly every turn, and it’s easy to fall for.
This episode captures my brief but vivid time in Sweden’s capital. From royal palaces and Viking ships to cozy bakeries and quiet park corners—let’s begin.
A Royal Beginning: The Palace
Sweden’s Royal Palace, or Kungliga Slottet, is one of the largest functioning royal residences in Europe. I didn’t catch the changing of the guard, but the building’s grandeur still made an impression. Its riverside setting and perfectly symmetrical courtyard offered plenty to admire. Sculptures, stonework, and the ever-so-Nordic calm of the scene made this an early favorite on my walk through Stockholm.
Wandering Through Gamla Stan: Stockholm’s Old Town Charm
Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town, felt like walking through a fairy tale in full color. Every street had its own personality — some narrow and shadowy, others wide and glowing with ochre and gold. I wandered slowly, soaking in the warmth of historic facades, the scent of fresh coffee from cozy cafés, and the surprising calm for such a famously photogenic place.
One moment I was ducking down a crooked alley lit by antique lamps; the next, I was looking up at the spire of Storkyrkan catching the morning sun. Beauty waited in every direction. It was easy to imagine Stockholm’s medieval past still whispering through the cobblestones.
Café Culture & Foodie Finds
My time in Stockholm included a few memorable stops that were equal parts delicious and charming. Whether it was a quiet bakery on a rainy morning or a bustling pub filled with locals, each place offered something unique. From fresh pastries and savory bites to a lineup of local beers with unforgettable names, each spot had its own flavor.
Here’s a quick taste of the places that caught my eye — and my appetite
Stockholm in Bloom: Parks & Green Spaces
Even before the trees fully leaf out, Stockholm’s green spaces manage to charm. I wandered through Kungsträdgården just as cherry blossoms were beginning to bloom, their soft pink petals hinting at the season to come. Nearby, formal gardens, statues, fountains, and playful public art invited both stillness and surprise.
These pockets of nature made the city feel not only livable, but lovable.
Nordic Heritage Under One Roof
Set on the island of Djurgården, the Nordiska Museet is an architectural marvel. It looks more like a fairy-tale castle than a museum. Inside, soaring vaulted ceilings and moody lighting create a dramatic backdrop for the exhibits. These displays explore all matters of Scandinavian culture.
Whether you’re into history or just want to soak up a little Scandinavian ambiance, this place delivers a memorable slice of Nordic life.
The Nobel Legacy in Stockholm
Step into the story of the world’s most prestigious prize at the Nobel Museum, nestled in the heart of Gamla Stan. Housed in a beautifully preserved 18th-century building, the museum explores the lives and legacies of laureates who’ve shaped science, peace, and literature.
The official award ceremony takes place across the water at City Hall, but here, you’ll get an inspiring glimpse into the spirit of innovation that continues to define Sweden.
The Vasa Museum: Sweden’s Sunken Time Capsule
Step inside one of Stockholm’s most unique museums and come face-to-bow with the 17th-century warship Vasa, spectacularly salvaged and preserved after spending 333 years underwater. It’s a showstopper from the moment you walk through the entrance. From its intricate wood carvings to the sheer scale of the ship, the museum tells a fascinating story of ambition, engineering missteps, and historical resurrection.
I could’ve spent hours exploring the surrounding exhibits, the miniature shipyard model, and the richly detailed galleries.
Waterfront Views & Stockholm Skyline
Few cities do waterfront charm quite like Stockholm. With the city spread across 14 islands, there’s no shortage of scenic shoreline to wander. From the historic facades of Gamla Stan to modern galleries and museums along the harbor, every turn brought a new postcard view.
The water adds a sense of calm and clarity to Stockholm’s urban energy. It’s a dream to photograph and an even better place to be.
Final Thoughts
From royal palaces to blooming parks, cozy cafés to waterfront strolls — Stockholm blends tradition and modernity with ease. It feels both stately and soulful. History is proudly on display, but it never weighs the city down.
Wander any street and you’ll find a surprise. The views seem made for postcards. Some moments felt straight out of a storybook. I left with tired feet, a full camera roll, and a deep appreciation for this effortlessly cool Scandinavian capital.
